Or use electric engines on the HSR segment, and diesels on not yet electrified trackage. We had electric trains DC-NH for decades--including Metroliners. Pax on the higher speed Metroliners changed trains; pax in conventional equipment lost 15 minutes swapping engines, then proceeded to Boston. Easy to replicate if the HSR cars are designed to be locomotive hauled.
