Re: U.P. operations through San Jose
My understanding is that since UP has rebuild and moved most South Bay Area locals to Warm Springs yard the Salinas Hauler, Rock Job, and Mission Bay Local have all been running to Warm Springs Yard instead of the sad remains of Newhall Yard. The first two jobs originate in Watsonville Jct. and run up the Coast Line. The easiest way to get to Warm Springs Yard would be to take the Warm Springs Sub from the San Jose Wye (used to be CP Shark, is it still?). This puts them running through areas of San Jose where apartments have been built up rather close to the line. The Mission Bay Local originates in South San Francisco, and I suspect it takes the same route to Warm Springs Yard as the others, but am not really sure. All three of these jobs go on duty around sunset, so you could end up with 6 trains (3 trains, once north, once south) after dark, on a line that as of a few years ago did not see much if anything after dark.
Here is a google maps line to the San Jose Wye:

The Warm Springs Sub is the line that runs east and north from the Wye for those not familiar with the area.
Hope this helps,
