Skeptic,
You do know that the fully allocated cost to operate your vehicle in around 80 cents a mile (most folks forget insurance and depreciation mileage costs), right?
Now, I know that Uber and Lyft expect some of you to operate your vehicle for them at less that the average cost per mile to operate. but, at least you can deduct that (as "independent contractors" for these exploititive a$$ pirates) excess amount from your income taxes....right?
And, what is the "market rate" cost per day to park at Denver's airport? Does it average a wee bit more than $12 a day to park your car at the airport?
So called "free" parking is one of the biggest "gubmint" mandated auto subsidies, where the local "gubmint" requires often much more parking than is required or used, as a condition of development.
With a new parking structure space costing over $100,000 per space, and Stan Hart's old estimate of 40% of urban land space (billions in land costs alone) dedicated to roads and parking, Professor Don Shoup, my old "contractor" and pal at UCLA, has called this one of the biggest 9and largely "hidden") "gubmint" (aka "socialist")subsidies to auto use.
And, finally, what does it really cost to operate that train?
Even though the US has fallen from the top ten in the year I was born, to around 43rd among nations today, in purported adult math and science "numeracy" (being "literate" with them there "numbers" for those who are illiterate, as well), but most of us can all still do this math, right?
Time value (especially with long wait times) and cost are what really matter in observed travel behavior choice, as FUD rightly notes....
Which is probably why I am even a bigger "skeptic" than you are....
