It isn't the speed. Its the thinking of the jerks involved wanting to off themselves and don't care about anybody or anything else.
Back in 69 & 70s flower people were doing the same thing. Came out of Tunnel 1 in 70, going east and there was a naked guy standing between the rails at 23rd St. He was holding his hand up as a stop sign until we hit him at 40 mph. That blew the schedule on the commutes.
Down out of SLO I hit another guy, standing between the rails holding up a jug. It was just east of Capitan. We were hitting about 60 (I had the Zipper, # 374) and it was an unguarded xing west of Naples.
I killed or injured a lot of people in 42 years. Don't slow down the trains, have the jerks get a gun and do the job off company property. In that way, we don't have to go to court months or years later, reliving the crap. There was a hogger out of the City, "Perfect Paul" was almost a magnet to hit people or cars. Almost every trip. We had our share in SLO, WJ, SJ & SF.
Its not the trains fault or the engineers. Speeds are set by Uncle Sam or the carriers and that's the way it is.
I had a friend that worked for the CHP in Northern Calif. I finally had him ride a few trips with me and he could not believe it.
The only answer is to shut off ANY access to the Rof W, like Japan has done. Won't happen in the US..
