Why would anybody invest in something that still needs 50+ billion dollars and a lot of drilling to be operational. Would the Japanese, French or anybody else for that matter have created successful systems if the government hadn't first put down a backbone. In any major endeavor private enterprise needs the cost and risk to be within reason. Would Musk and Bezos be investing in Space travel if the government (NASA) hadn't laid down a foundation. Would Apple be around if the government hadn't created Bell Labs. Would Grand Coulee dam ever have been built if we had waited for private investors. You get my point.
