Re: Architect designing replacement for collapsed Genoa bridge claims good for 1000 years

I thought about putting the aquaduct comparison into my post but forgot this morning. The surviving aquaducts are shorter and lower and only carrying a relatively light and consistent load. And they were there "foistest with the mostest" so they got the sweet spot locations with the best mooring.

The long Morandi bridge looks to be in a rather hokey location dodging buildings and other obstructions. A better comparison might be the Colosseum as a structure that got wrecked out of neglect and the Pantheon as one that survived in good order due to being converted into a church in continued use.

Think of the GG Bridge, iconic and all; but it has to continue to serve a real function to generate the maintenance it constantly requires. Excellent argument for the second deck for rail.
