Uber is just a glorified taxi company; the real game changer would be self-driving cars that most people could afford. The crunch then, and a real one, would be road and parking capacity.
Public transit has always had tough enemies. To wit:
1. The most visceral and vicious - the Highway Lobby comprised of many interests rotating about the internal combustion auto and its numerous hardware and software support services.
2. Jitneys, scooters, Segways, bicycles, etc.
3. Low lifes that haunt and grunge public transit facilities and give transit a ghetto rep.
4. Greedy and stupid unions(like the ones who helped to destroy the streetcar system in Sf with their nimrod demand for 2 man operation). I suspect the union leaders had been quietly corrupted by diesel busmen.
5. Most vomitous: the starchitects and their "wireophobia"
And the list goes on...
