While all of you bicker back and forth about Ed Dickens, the Big Boy and Union Pacific, the Reading & Northern in Northeastern Pennsylvania is offering a full schedule of excursions with diesels, a steam locomotive and RDCs in October and November.

The Reading & Northern's steam locomotive, #425, is smaller than the Big Boy. However, having listened to it depart from Jim Thorpe in 2016, I can tell you it has a big sound. Speaking of big, the Reading & Northern is restoring 2102, a Reading 4-8-4 to operation.

One more plus about the Reading & Northern excursions - they are modestly priced - $39 for the diesel and RDC excursions and $69 for the steam excursions between Reading and Jim Thorpe, PA.
