Years ago we just borrowed a packset from one of the conductors and proceeded,
Back when 35/36 was running a railfan out of Fullerton heard the head end radio was bad so he rushed to Fullerton, loaned us high gain mag mount antenna and a adapter for the old GE packsets and we ran to Vegas, the packset with the high gain mag mount was more sensitive than the old headend Areotron and the Skate antenna, Felt real bad the the railfan because he never got his antenna back so we gave him a couple of free trips to Vegas (And he always carried another high gain mag mount and his own packset, which came in handy on one trip back on 35 when the Areotron was dead out of Salt Lake (we made sure he got his antenna back!)
