This is just more R&D. No one seriously believes battery powered road locomotives will be produced any time soon. Diesel fuel is too cheap, too available and the EPA restrictions not sufficiently cost prohibitive to invest in alternative power.
Same thing with all the fuss over self-driving cars. Never going to happen. The fact that nobody is discussing the issues surrounding integration of self-driving cars with the chimp-driven cars we already have should be obvious.
What about insurance for self-driving cars? All this cool talk about can we do it and when, but are there any adults in the room to point out the regulatory and financial/legal liability clusterf*ck that will result between the owners and manufacturers of self-driving cars and the municipalities who will have to have 5G integrated roadways in order for the whole self-driving car fantasy to work every time there's an accident.
Any insurance companies care to provide a quote for full coverage on a self-driving car? Nah, I didn't think so.
