While working in the pit, the second crew member was probably riding the point a lot (assuming they operated that way). The point of the high cab was so the engineer could see over the tops of the ore cars. I don't think these units were meant for the line haul to the smelter--they had SD40-2s for that. At least one still operates with the high cab, on the Salt Lake Garfield & Western RR.
