What about Syphilis?

I've heard a theory that European explorers like our hero Christopher Columbus brought Syphilis to the New World. Leave it to a bunch of horny sailors. Didn't European diseases also wipe out native popluations in vast numbers?

PS. Europeans also introduced invasive species like Himalayan Blackberries (an awful weed), and the English Starling to America.

Footnote: I don't see oozing pus listed as a symptom of Syphilis.
