FedEx ground is horribly unreliable, especially in and around Chicago area. I had a shipment in January with a "weather delay" in Chicago for 3 days. The weather was rainy and 50. I actually make bets with my friends about where and for how long FedEx ground shipments will get delayed.
Some FedEx Ground goes intermodal, very little, but some. FedEx freight does a lot of intermodal.
FedEx is terrible to their carriers, demands pinpoint service and fires them with regularity. Only to replace someone else who cannot meet their unrealistic demands, so the poor service is sure to continue. They probably average 97% ontime, but they want 99.8. But don't dare say anything when the loads are habitually ready late, or they will just tell you that as the carrier, you must be ontime.
