Question for Tom McCann - considering that the East Bank Esplanade goes thru the industrial backside of East Portland, how safe is the trail ??? My wife & I walked across the Steel Bridge several years ago while visiting the Skidmore Market & encountered several " locals ", complete with shopping carts & attitudes, on the East side of the bridge. And this occurred during the Rose Festival weekend , when Navy ships were tied up along the waterfront. Perhaps the " locals " were agitated at being removed from their normal haunts, or maybe this was an isolated incident. We would like to bike this & the Springwater trail; would you consider this safe in the daylight hours ???
