Henry Bender's book, Southern Pacific Lines: Standard Design Depots (page 113), provided the clue to the answer -- "Verano" was a place on the NWP, "El Verano" was a place nearby on the SP.

Let the digging begin!

This page provides a map showing the relationship of the two places: [localwiki.org]. Found via: [www.google.com]

This page provides another clue about "Verano": [books.google.com]. Found via: [www.google.com]

This page provides more info about the "Verano" depot and Paul's Resort, including an excellent map: [springsmuseum.org]. Found via: [www.google.com]

If you're really into arcane nostalgia, you can do some digging into the Railroad Gazetteer, Volume 50, Issue 2 here: [books.google.com]

And while we're in El Verano, let us not forget Juanita Musson: [www.google.com]
