I lived in downtown El Verano in the late 1960s when Juanita had her restaurant nearby - complete with her pet chicken (named Chicken Shi*) who rode about on her shoulder. I have wondered why the SP kept the NWP line through Ignacio rather than the one through the Sonoma Valley since the latter would have been a shorter route to Eureka. I suspect that timing is everything.
