An auction question and concern about railroadiana

I buy slides over at that auction site. I consider myself a small time buyer with a meager budget so I only buy what interests me. I like Kodachrome originals; not dupes.
So here's my observation/question. Bidding was unusually active. I placed high bids (obviously not high enough) and couldn't win a single auction (there were 4 different slides of different trains at the same location).
After the auction finished, I received not one but 3 different "second chance" offers. These arrived within 5 minutes after losing all 4 auctions from the same seller. All of these honor my highest bid offer (the last 3 because my first bid was a moderate bid).
To me something is fishy and doesn't seem right to me. Either I was bidding against a shill or two who were driving up the price or I am being offered dupe slides for a sky-high price. Now if the second chance offers came in the following day or two, then I could swallow/accept that the highest/winning buyer flaked out.
Any thoughts?
