Well, they'll stop wildfires caused by sparks from the exhaust and hot catalytic converters. Admittedly, that hasn't started a large proportion of wildfires, but some. Enough that some vehicle manuals caution against parking in dry grass or other locations where combustible materials can be near the catalytic converter.

The spin is that they will move transportation toward energy sources (what makes the electricity?) that are renewable rather than fossil-fuel based. Which over a long time will allow CO2 production to return to a rough balance with CO2 removal by natural processes, stopping or slowing warming of the atmosphere which provides the energy needed for more and stronger storms and pressure differences, and drier and hotter weather, and thereby reducing the number and severity of wildfires. The spin has a basis in fact, but as with all spin probably overstates its case to some degree. And in any case, the effect is long-term, not this year or next year. Humans are not good at dealing with long-term issues. Long term for most humans is beyond the next paycheck or quarterly dividend; for greenhouse gases, we're looking at centuries to millenia, at least, for things to return to the Pleistocene/Holocene average.
