Also...UP didn't take over the Milwaukee Road. Rather, Milwaukee gained rights from Tacoma to Portland as a result of the Burlington Northern merger, which Milwaukee had no access to Portland previously. So during the 1970s BN (former GN + NP), UP and Milwaukee all shared the line between Portland and Seattle along with Amtrak - effectively a net increase of one railroad.
