I found an online petition from a few years ago to preserve the tracks around the bay for tourist train use. The managed to get 3400 signers. Well that obviously isn't going to happen now. Also, if sea levels rise like people are saying, then all this will be moot anyway.

"We, concerned citizens of Humboldt County hope to protect the historic Northwestern Pacific Railroad from Samoa to Eureka, and possibly up to, but not beyond South Fork, for a tourist/excursion train."
