Budd RDC's would be cool but I'm afraid too retro for the SMARTer Image.

Realistically the prime mover would likely have to replaced to meet current and future air pollution standards. Even Siemens was forced to admit the dmu market was "niche" - translation: uncommon and expensive, both to manufacture and maintain. Do you really want to set yourself up where you will have to fabricate your own replacement parts after a few years? The market for light rail(articulated streetcars) is much bigger, consequently easier to obtain spares.
