If one stands on a station platform and looks into the cab, one see the engineer's right ear. If the engineer has some sort of device (such as a "Bluetooth") in his left ear, it would not be obvious from the platform.
Additionally, a locomotive with a "Desk Top" control stand will not permit someone standing on the platform to see what's on the desk.
