This Tenn Pass announcement got me thinking. It seems to me that starting a small railroad is one of the most difficult business ventures imaginable. The odds are overwhelmingly against the start-up railroad.

Off the top of my head, here are some things working against you: Huge capital costs, insurance costs, competition with trucks, customer lifecycles that are short and unpredictable, uncooperative Class I's, acts of God like slides and washouts, and costly lawsuits and political fights with property owners and municipalities.
