The Del Monte at San Jose

The last week of April, 1971, as the Del Monte, the oldest named train on the SP, is being worked by the depot switcher at SP's Cahill St.(Rod who?) station in San Jose. The F-M H12-44 #2380 will pull away GP9 #3002 leaving #3004 to take the three lightweight coaches to Monterey leaving the subs behind. In a few days, the Del Monte will fade into history with the coming of Amtrak on May 1st.

In the background, the PG&E gas storage tank wil later give way to San Jose's Ice Palace.
