I remember I was near College Park Tower in April 1993 when it closed and the SP Signal Department was cutting over the new signal system that replaced the Tower's. Not long after the cut over got going, that sports arena caught on fire and you could see the flames comming out of the top! The SP Signal Dept. were using channel 86 (161.4) that night to talk to each other to do the signal testing. They were remarking to each other over the radio about that fire. Then one of them said, "That is sure alot of money down the toilet", in response to the chatter about the fire. Someone else came on and said, "Are you referring to the Arena or this lousy Signal System were cutting Over?" Then the radio got silent for a few minutes while not only myself, but the signal guys around me, almost fell on the ground, laughing so hard! It was sad to see College Park Tower get the "life" cut out of it that night, but I have watched about 2 dozen Tower or Interlocking offices close in my life, so I guess I am just used to it.
To quote Steve Gust, UP Terminal Train Dispatcher 57 in Roseville, "That's progress, I guess?"
