Once upon a time UPS offered “2nd Day Air” except if you shipped it that way on certain days it wasn’t going to be delivered until the Monday after a weekend. It was cheaper in those cases for UPS to ship by rail since it would still arrive in time for a Monday delivery. They dropped the “Air” part when people realized their package never was anywhere near an airplane.

A lot of packages move by rail in this manner still.
