Once upon a time UPS offered “2nd Day Air” except if you shipped it that way on certain days it wasn’t going to be delivered until the Monday after a weekend. It was cheaper in those cases for UPS to ship by rail since it would still arrive in time for a Monday delivery. They dropped the “Air” part when people realized their package never was anywhere near an airplane. A lot of packages move by rail in this manner still.

Red tag next day had Saturday delv.

2nd day did not.

UPS ground was sometimes faster, less expensive and had Saturday!

"Friday noon" was their deadline for Tuesday close on "2nd day" (actual four days)!

We always shipped red tag next day and never had a single problem with ground the same!

Ground was $3.95, 2nd day $6.95 and next day $9.95.
