Four persons were run over by a train at Sain-Jean-de-Luz Tuesday October 12th. Among the victims apparently lying on the tracks at the moment of the collision, three died instantly. The fourth was seriously injured.
Multiple reports gathered during the morning confirm that the victims were lying on the tracks asleep before the arrival of the train, the first of the day. Among the four victims, two have been identified by police as Algerian immigrants.
The route through the Pays Basque [region of France] is often utilized by immigrants wishing to reach France via Spain before continuing towards Great Britain. Local groups deplore the danger of this route. “Police patrols are incessant leading necessarily to a situation where immigrants attempt, whatever the cost, to cross the border, taking greater and greater risks,” explains Amaia Fontan, President of an immigrant assistance organization.
