One thing that I have always found interesting about SP utilization of steam is that in the year 1956, the last full year of steam, the railroad used 12 different wheel arrangements:
0-6-0
2-6-0
4-6-0
4-6-2
0-8-0
2-8-0
2-8-2
4-8-2
4-8-2
2-10-2
4-8-8-2
2-8-8-4 (3804 and 3805 on the Modoc until around March)
You could also argue the Bayshore shop switcher 966, an 0-6-0T, an another.

Compare this with ATSF which was only using 4-8-4 and 2-10-4 types out of Belen to Mountainaire, NM in the summer of 1957.
