I'm sure that there are plenty of city pairs in the U.S. that would be happy to be connected by passenger rail that reached a top speed of 250 km/h (about 150 mph).

But, it's not just the top speed. Having a dedicated passenger line that gets the faster trains onto their own tracks, away from the congestion on existing tracks, makes a lot of difference, too.

And as the images in the above video indicate, these direct passenger lines are, in a word, more direct, bypassing the twists and turns required by the landscape with tunnels and bridges.
