Last I heard, both bridges can't support the weight of trains, and have to be completely demolished and replaced. It would cost $65 million, and the RTC is balking at this, hence why they've been in backroom negotiations with Trail Now to replace the rails with a trail.

Of course, their scheme got exposed to the public, and Measure D failed. If they tried to go through with it now, there would be hell to pay with Roaring Camp, the state, and the STB.
