According to our Cities most recent homeless survey 1/3 of all of our homeless are mentally ill, and another 1/3 are mentally and physically disabled. About half of all of our homeless are mentally ill or mentally disabled and really need 24/7 in-patient and/or outpatient supervised housing. These are the folks with the many problems we are finding on the MTA trains and buses. And who our corrupt Sheriff refuses to remove from the trains and buses, because he is in a political pissing contest with the Board of Supervisors who make up the MTA Board.

Hotel/motel conversions have worked in some places, but mostly with housing women and children who need transitional housing due to things like divorce, failure to pay child support, and/or spousal abuse. These folks have more support because of the children and tend to find housing once their situations stabilize. Where they have poor security and poor supervision these folks are just being warehoused, and bring those uncontrolled problems to new neighborhoods.

In my City right now, we have some wannabee "do-gooders" who are high on "tiny houses" which they want to put on unused City properties and in church parking lots. They did this in Eagle Rock on a Caltrans park and ride lot, and the results have been disastrous for the adjacent neighborhoods, due to lack of adequate supervision and security.

The mentally ill and mentally disabled need real solutions and long term group supervised housing, not "Hooverville hovels" or warehousing in unused motels.

Of course, I see from some of thes comments, that some of the mentally ill neo Nazi pervert trolls on AP have their own ideas for solutions. Which are interesting, as they all seem to be potential clients for such housing, when mom finally throws them out of the basement....
