Most folks would consider this a really bad day at the "office"...
The problem with the one man ground crew when switching is that you sometimes need a long field man...
A promoted conductor with two years of experience, and a failed kick up grade to a joint with the cut... Inexperience and lack of "coverage" (a third man would have ridden the cut to a joint, or tied it down, or chunked it, with a full crew)... No 2nd man on the ground, no second chance to fix a small mistake...
