They were impressive. I began my career as a lowly track laborer on the UPRR in 1973 and snuck over to the fuel pad for a look when one came in. I remember the large cab and dual amp meters.

6903 was involved in a serious collision on Cajon pass in 1974. A recall that it struck a standing Santa Fe train ahead lifting up its caboose up to the platform and clearing off the nose and cab all the way to the lead diesel engine. According to "the internet" the head brakeman was killed and the engineer and a trainman on the ATSF caboose were injured. Back in those days we weren't always walking around with a camera and I've never seen a picture.

The locomotive was towed to East yard and a temporary hand brake was installed on the mess that used to be the cab floor and the unit was shipped east for scrapping.
