Another clue that it is westbound hasn't been mentioned - should be obvious to any seasoned photographer - or even to a boy scout with his "Orienteering Badge" - without any special regional knowledge, or consulting anything other than the picture itself!
Consider the shadows, that they are short and cast ahead slightly to the right. The only external data required is to know that the pictured train operated in the northern hemisphere (obvious by it appearance).
Thus, with the sun at our backs, somewhere near near mid day, we are looking in a northerly direction. Anything then moving to the left is traveling in a westerly direction.
BTW, it was a professional photographer-artist that pointed all that out to me - within seconds.
