Thanks C&NW fan. I take it that C&NW sold the station to a developer. I remember reading in Trains Magazine as a kid that LaSalle and the C&NW stations were proposed for demolition, but there was a movement to try to save the C&NW station. Obviously, it was unsuccessful. Was it considered for Landmark status? Was there a big preservation fight? Interestingly, I can't find anything on the internet at all that discusses any kind of protest or consideration for landmark status for Northwestern Station. By contrast, there is a lot of stuff in the internet about Penn Station.
Admittedly, from what I've read the station seemed underutilized in its later years, particually with the main entrance even being boarded up, and the new building seems impressive itself. However, it seems like they could have preserved the headhouse and incorporated it with the new building being built farther North over the tracks. I guess that would have been too inconvenient for the developer though....(sarcasm intended).
