I find it odd that Alstom’s Avelia product is being considered, when long 3% grades to Tehachapi Pass will give distributed traction a big advantage. The acid test is stopping and restarting uphill on wet rail with a motor or an inverter out. Few people realize that California’s HSR system will be among the most mountainous in the world, certainly without equivalent in Europe where these two suppliers hail from.
