The Guide to the Milwaukee Road in Montana is long out of print and a few years ago, it was fetching around $90.00. There is a very well done guide to the Milwaukee Road in Idaho.

I second the suggestion of checking out the Route of the Hiawatha Trail. It was my best rail experience which did not involve actual trains.

I also once spent a long summer evening walking the Milwaukee Road right-of-way east from the Missoula station.
