Um, you don't meet any freights SLC-Reno because it's two separate mainlines that are paired, one mainline goes east one goes west. Been that way since long before UP and SP merged. Nominally you should only meet locals.

As for the padding, yes I have noticed they've added a LOT of running time to trains, but it beats being late I suppose.
