Huh... You mean that more people live in these areas than did 30 years ago? Strange... Who would have thought?....

Where are all of the open spaces in San Francisco that the outlying subdivisions would have otherwise been located if BART never came to be?

Let's see, on one hand, drive 10-20 miles to BART station then commute 20-30 miles via BART. On the other hand, drive 30-50 miles in a car to work... Yep, no reduction in auto traffic there. BART was way off...
I don't know, sounds like you may be being a little unreasonable...
