Memory tells me it was 1967 when the USPS cancelled the mail by rail contracts. Too bad that happened. If the fed government had mandated by law that USPS use rail carriers, it would have kept many passenger trains profitable, and made the transition to Amtrak less costly for carriers. I dunno. I'm not an expert policy analyst. I think Ed Ellis tried shipping mail by Amtrak, but someone in power squashed that idea.
