Rest of the story said:
"I always get a chuckle when Amtrak fans complain about all of the Republican presidents who wanted to get rid of Amtrak and forget that good ol' James Earl (Jimmy) Carter (a Democrat) was actually the most successful president at killing off Amtrak routes. Thanks to Jimmy there is no direct Amtrak service from Chicago to Florida and from New York to St. Louis and Kansas City, among others."
But the real rest of the story is that during the Carter Administration, new locomotives were ordered including 60 AEM-7 electrics, steam heating was almost entirely replaced with more reliable electrical heating and new trains were added. Among the new trains added were the Pioneer, Pennsylvanian, Prarie Marksman, Hoosier State and Desert Wind. Additionally, Amtrak assumed responsbility for the Southern Crescent during the Carter Administration.
Jimmy Carter critics/Ronald Reagan fans always seem to ignore the trains eliminated during the Reagan administration. These include the Black Hawk, Shenandoah, Pacific International, Prarie Marksman and North Star.
Another poster failed to tell the complete story of the Broadway Limited. Yes, it ended during the Clinton Administration, but a second train frequency remained between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh as the Three Rivers. Before the end of the Clinton Administration, it was extended to Chicago. The Three Rivers was killed during the administration of Bush 2.0. Not even one of the most powerful Senators, Rick Santorum (Republican of Pennsylvania) made much of an effort to save this train.
To those who say there is no difference in political parties with respect to Amtrak, a chart on page 29 of the April 2009 issue of Trains shows the following:
Since Amtrak's creation, the highest request from a presidential administration was almost 1.4 Billion requested by the Carter Administration for Fiscal Year 81. Reagan and Bush 1.0 requested 0 dollars for Amtrak for every year of Fiscal Years 1986-91. Bush 2.0 requested 0 dollars for Amtrak for Fiscal year 2007.
