SP's DD-35's had a control stand, along with air brake controls, located in the "tunnel" between the two prime movers, which could actually operate those "cabless" units "independently".

One day we all got a smart idea at the Taylor Turnout to use one to push a dead unit in front of it, in a cut of locomotives that came down from "Cape Canaveral", to the Taylor Diesel Ramp in a hostling move, to save us a move from having to run around the inoperative locomotive.

To get signals you had to run out and look out around the long ends to see where you were going and take signals.

As we were pulling this "stunt", Rollin Roberts the Road Foremen drove up, took one look at this nonsense, and put an immediate stop to our antics...

They were used, along with the other DD variations on UP, but never really caught on at SP.

I seem to remember these were used a lot as added HPT on "dog trains" on the LA Indio West Pool, like the Mountain local, along with other crappy locomotive designs that trains fans loved, and real rails universally hated, like the total POS GE U-50's
