In the olde dayze (before any of us were born, even the über-geriatrics) those mayors could be bought off with a nice little station and perhaps some "campaign contributions." With stations costing a $million or more these days just for a basic platform and shelter, and various anti-corruption laws, that won't work any more. Oh well.
What happened to Barstow's abortive attempt to get a station on the HSR line now known as Brightline West. They were fairly noisy about it a decade or 2 ago when things got started. Now that it looks like it will really happen I don't expect the Barstow passage (at speed) to happen without a little drama like these mayors provide.
