I worked at the 8th St. Coach Yard from March 15, 1990 to November 28, 1995. Trains 35 and 36 should have never been taken off, but you can blame that on former Amtrak President Tom Downs(ise). We used to send out that train 36, with 2 coaches, mostly filled with people going to Vegas. When the train would arrive and the coaches would empty out, both Coaches would fill up again with people returning from Vegas to Salt Lake City. Same thing in reverse for train 35. I too rode the train several times in the 1990s and rode in the ex-Santa Fe Diner, turned into a Lounge on one end. Those were some fun times. If that train was still running today, they would be filling it with double the amount of people as long as Amtrak had the equipment. If they ever put back on any former Amtrak Long Distance ones, this would be the simplest and easiest to do, and UP had indicated officially in the past that they would be all for it for many reasons. BNSF Passenger Operations Department several years ago when DJ Mitchell was still Vice President, had indicated that BNSF still retained the slots for this train as well and was willing to work with Amtrak if they wanted to put it back. However, now you have the new Brightline Train being built, so you wouldn't have much in the way of LA to Las Vegas traffic, but you would still have plenty that would ride it from the Salt Lake City end, as well as other locations other than Vegas. Just my 2 cents worth. Only reason Amtrak stopped running the extra LA to Vegas coach only, was UP upped the charges to store the car overnight and upped the charges to the point that it was no longer practical to do, and this move ended in the mid-1980s as I recall.
