Several Desert Wind moments come to mind for me. The first involved my dad & I, and an extra Superliner coach from L.A. to Las Vegas, filled with a POLKA BAND and many Polka dancers ! There was a Polka Convention in Las Vegas, and several band members walked the train ( with their instruments !! ) to advertise the coming weekend events in Sin City. A great time was had by all, including the rear end U.P. trainman...
The 2nd Desert Wind memory concerned my return from riding The Very Last RIO GRANDE ZEPHYR to make it to Salt Lake City, UT., in April 1983. That is another story for another time; however I do remember seeing the sliding side doors - In The AmDinette - being propped open with a broom due to failure of the car's AC unit !!! Wondering how many rules were " overlooked " on that deal ??
