Not only can man manipulate the climate, he has been doing so ever since widespread coal burning started at the beginning of the industrial revolution (1820 or so). The rate of increase of average global temperature has been so gradual it didn't become noticeable until relatively recently. According to the Milaknovic cycles we should be heading into an ice age, but we're not (think "atmosphere on Venus").
