So often, on this board and other places, posters have difficulty distinguishing between responses that disagree (with the poster's assumptions, arguments, facts, and value systems) and responses that make a personal attack on the poster.

I'm glad that Rich says "... chances are I'm not going to hunt you down ... " but even that implies to me that there is some chance (5%? 10%? 25%?) that he will.

Yes, if I state (truthfully) that the schoolroom bully is wearing smelly socks, I'm responsible for the (later) consequences of his darkening one of my eyes; so, next time there is a classroom discussion of appropriate hygiene do you think I'll be a fully participating member of the exchange?

I think Rich has illustrated another reason why some posters use "handles" to conceal their real identities
