John-- Thanks for your response.. I'll bet your TWO grandfathers knew my grandfather, Vic Shattock, Water Service Dept at West Oakland.. Ferryboat fuel was one of his responsibilities.
Ernie Haase was Supv of B&B Dept.. The big woodworking mill was close by..

I'm looking for a WP right-of-way photo(s) looking both directions where it crossed over 38th Avenue, East of San Leandro Street, nextdoor to the old Dewey School...
As a very small boy, my grandfather would take me to 38th Avenue, which we lived on, and the WP r-o-w, at around 3pm and watch the Zephyr come into town from back East..

By the way, before 1930, my grandparents lived at 1525- 37th Avenue and there was that enormous grassy field at the dead end of the street, across Peralta Creek, where kids used to play. It was bigger than a football field. They moved around the corner to 1877-38th Avenue and that is where he built his famous Live Steam railroad in the basement...
