Americans seem hung up on being like Europe, they forget things like HSR work because distances are shorter & etc. Ross is right, It would cost a small fortune to keep a busy heavy freight main line up to HSR standards year round, unit trains, freeze thaw, mountain passes---someone is gonna have to have really deep pockets to keep surfacing and lining and tamping tracks to keep them bump free for HSR, switch frogs would have to be welded daily to keep them from getting too rough----will keep lost of people employed.
